A quick and easy first step towards a climate-positive building stock.
“Mein Klimatool” (available in German) provides a simple and clear guide to which climate protection measures make sense right now and how to implement them step by step.

Technical information

“Mein Klimatool” has been developed as a Progressive Web App (PWA).

It can be used directly in the browser or installed on your own device. All entries are stored locally and remain on the respective device.

For long-term backup, the data can be exported and reloaded.

Why is this issue important?

The effects of climate change are already being felt today. Heatwaves, heavy rainfall and rising energy costs affect us all. To protect the climate, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced rapidly and significantly.

The building sector plays a central role in this. Buildings generate a lot of emissions – yet at the same time, they offer great potential for solutions.

The goal is a climate-positive building stock: buildings should not only emit less CO₂, but actively contribute to climate protection.

The DGNB Guide

To support this transformation, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) has developed a comprehensive guide as part of the European #BuildingLife project.
A total of 350 specific measures have been drawn up. These are organised into four strategic objectives and 15 areas of action and are aimed at different stakeholder groups.

The DGNB guide shows:

  • which political and legal frameworks are important
  • where most emissions are generated in the building sector
  • what measures are needed to become climate-neutral and, in the long term, climate-positive
Info

The #BuildingLife campaign was launched by the World Green Building Council in the run-up to the COP26 climate conference, with financial support from the IKEA Foundation, the Laudes Foundation and the European Climate Foundation. The campaign focuses on calling on national governments and the European Commission to support bold and ambitious policy measures that take into account greenhouse gas emissions across a building’s entire life cycle and bring them down to net zero.

What is the “Mein Klimatool”?

The Mein Klimatool makes this guide easy to use.

It helps you select, from the wide range of measures available, precisely those that suit your own role and scope for action.

The tool helps you turn knowledge into action – step by step.

What are the benefits of “Mein Klimatool”?

With the Climate Tool, users can:

  • find suitable actions tailored to their own role and sphere of influence
  • develop clear objectives for their own actions
  • identify prioritised actions for immediate implementation
  • visualise progress and track it systematically
The key point is this: every contribution counts – regardless of whether you are acting as an individual, a business or an organisation.

How the tool works

1. Getting started & personalisation
Once you have entered your name and selected the relevant stakeholder group(s), the tool begins with a brief introduction.

2. Discovering measures
All relevant measures are clearly presented – organised by strategic objectives and areas of action.

3. Set favourites
You can easily flag measures of interest and save them as personal favourites.

4. Track implementation
For each selected measure, you can document your own progress and add notes.

5. Keep track of progress
An overview shows which measures have already been implemented and where further action is required. Progress can be exported if needed.

Für wen ist das Mein Klimatool gedacht?

The tool is aimed at all stakeholders in the construction and property sectors, including:

  • Planners
  • Contractors
  • Property owners
  • Property managers
  • Manufacturers
  • and other interested parties who wish to make an active contribution to climate protection
  • For some of these groups, there are also dedicated action programmes designed to make it particularly easy to get started.
You can find links to the relevant programmes under Further information.

Conclusion

The path to a climate-positive building stock is challenging – but achievable.
“Mein Klimatool” tool provides guidance, makes complex topics easy to understand and helps you take concrete steps.

Miriam Laudien
Miriam Laudien has been working in the Research and Development team at DGNB since April 2023. After studying architecture in Aachen, she worked for many years as a building physicist specialising in acoustics. The realisation that the construction industry can have a significant impact on climate protection prompted her to change career direction. At DGNB, she focuses primarily on climate-neutral renovation of existing buildings and contributes to international research projects.
